Before You Get Your Swimming Pool: Some Things to Think About

Whether you are interested in putting up an aboveground pool or making the financial investment of having an inground pool installed, there are some important things you need to learn about and decide.  Each pool style and feature has advantages and disadvantages, and there is not one right answer for everyone.  Here are a few of the important things you need to think about before you even start making plans for that pool.

First, figure out what sort of budget you have to work with.  Some experts warn that the average pool winds up costing about twice as much as the homeowner originally thought it would.  Be aware that the installation of the pool is not the end of the investment.  The maintenance of the water requires ongoing use of pool chemicals, and they can run into money over the course of a summer.  If you don't have the time to do your own pool treatments, you will have to hire someone to maintain your pool.  Keeping the chemical balance right is something you cannot let yourself neglect, even in a cheap discount store pool for the kids.

Another thing to think about is how you and your family intend to use your pool.  Is anyone in the family truly interested in water sports or swimming laps for health?  Or will you probably just be floating around relaxing?  What about parties?  Will you be entertaining other people around the pool or do you prefer to keep to yourselves?  Serious lap swimming and entertaining could signal the need for a bigger or fancier pool than a simpler lifestyle.  If you don't need the fancy stuff, why not save the money and go with a simpler (and less expensive) pool style.

In addition to the chemicals, pools require other maintenance.  Gunite pools (a type of concrete) require periodic resurfacing.  Vinyl liners in above ground or inground pools can be damaged by sharp toys.  If you want a deck or a concrete pool area around your pool, they will require extra expense for installation and maintenance.

How much space do you have in your yard and where in the yard would you like to situate the pool?  A pool takes us quite a bit of space that could be used for other purposes, such as having a vegetable garden.  If you want both, or have other things you like to use your yard for, you may want to limit yourself to a smaller pool.  There are some creative pool designs on the market that offer the feeling of spaciousness and luxury in a relatively small area.
