Introduction to Swimming Pool Covers |
|
If you own a swimming pool, it is essential that you have at least one style of cover for it. Pool covers are made in several different styles that accomplish different purposes. Here is an introduction to the different types of swimming pool covers available.
First, there are waterproof, durable covers designed to keep pool water safe and as clean as possible while the pool is closed for the winter. For inground pools, some of these winterizing covers are made with water bags along the outer edges. The water bags are filled with water to provide weight to keep the pool cover in place. Other styles attach securely around the sides of the pool, whether inground or aboveground.
Note: Children should never be allowed to run or play on a covered pool, even though you may have seen commercials showing elephants standing on them or people walking on them. While the pool cover may save the life of a toddler that ventures out onto it, children need to always be carefully supervised when you own a pool, covered or not.
During the swimming season, it is a good practice to cover the pool when not in use, with a close weave mesh cover. This sort of cover lets rainwater through, but keeps out leaves and other debris that might be blowing around. The advantage of letting the rainwater through is that it does not collect on the top of the cover. Many people do not cover their pools except when they are going to be away for a while or when there is a storm in the forecast.
Some pool covers are designed primarily for safety. One style of safety pool cover consists of an open mesh. This mesh attaches securely and acts as a deterrent to a small child crawling out onto the pool. The mesh is uncomfortable to little hands and knees, so they don't get very far before a parent becomes aware they are there. Other safety pool covers are rigid and secure. Some retractable rigid pool covers are designed to automatically cover or uncover an inground pool at the flip of a switch. These must be installed professionally. For safety, these state-of-the-art pool covers are designed to stop moving when they encounter an obstacle.
Pool covers usually come in basic, dark colors like black, dark green, or dark blue. They can be made of vinyl, polypropylene mesh, or other materials. Very secure, metal covers are sometimes called pool enclosures.
