Basic Info About Inground Swimming Pools

Nothing suggests luxury quite like having your own inground swimming pool.  These pools are not usually considered a do-it-yourself project, since a few mistakes in construction can make the pool much less efficient.  Any way you look at it, getting an inground pool will be a serious investment, so it pays to get the information you need before choosing your pool.

First, there is the decision of material to use when installing an inground pool.  One of the simplest choices is a fiberglass pool.  These are premolded and come in one piece.  They are fitted into a hole dug on you property.  One of the main advantages with a fiberglass pool is that they are long lasting.  They do not require a liner, so they will never need a new liner.  Also, a pool owner can save on chemicals with a  fiberglass inground swimming pool because it is easier to keep the water at the proper levels than with other types of pools.

A gunite pool is a type of concrete inground pool.  Gunite is a mix of concrete and other substances that is sprayed onto the inside of the pool.  Gunite pools are expensive and very strong, but the surface may need to be refinished to keep it new looking.  Some pool owners see that as a benefit, because they can update the look of the pool, something that is not so easy to do with a fiberglass pool.  Another advantage of a gunite swimming pool is that the homeowner can choose virtually any shape and design for their pool.

The least expensive type of inground swimming pool is a vinyl liner pool.  Vinyl liners can crack and tear in time and will eventually need to be replaced.  Another consideration with a vinyl liner is that the weight of the water keeps the liner in place.  It is generally not recommended that you drain a vinyl liner pool.  When vinyl liner pools are installed, the homeowner has the option of adding a layer of foam padding to make the pool more comfortable, an option not available with the other types of inground pools.

All inground swimming pools require a reinforced structure be installed to support them.  This structure can be made of concrete, steel, aluminum, or other materials.  It is important to find a reputable contractor to do this job.  Get references when hiring this contractor.  Remember, too, that there will be other expenses, such as fencing, lighting, and possibly landscaping.
