Any aboveground pool is improved with the addition of a deck.  There are a number of options for doing this.  Your choice will depend on your budget and your preferences.  Some aboveground pools are designed with a walking width deck around the top, but those are the more expensive pools.  If your pool does not come with its own deck, here are some ways to add a deck to your swimming area.

One option is to build a deck of cedar or other suitable wood.  Many do-it-yourselfers are able to construct a deck on their own.  Decks are not extremely expensive as building materials go.  If you build your own, you can make it as elaborate or simple as you desire.  You can have it join the pool to the back porch, or you can have the deck just around the pool and build stairs up to it.  Of course it will need a safety railing since it will be four feet above the ground or more.

Another option for an easy addition of a pool deck is to use a product called "Connect-a-Deck."  This is a prefabricated platform made of welded aluminum.  It is designed to connect to the side of any aboveground swimming pool.  The platform is carpeted with all-weather carpet.  Connect-a-Deck platforms are available in three different sizes and shapes.  Each has it's own ladder to get onto the deck as well as a ladder for getting down into the pool.  The Connect-a-Deck replaces the A-shaped ladder that comes with an aboveground pool.

One of the three shapes available is a 4 by 4 foot square.  There is also a 4 by 8 foot rectangle available as well as a fan-shape that is 5 by 7 feet.  These shapes are designed to connect to each other so that you can either have a small or large deck beside your pool or you can completely surround it.  The price of each unit ranges from $550 to $900.  They are reported to work with any pool, old or new.

There is a lot of information online for those individuals who would like to build a pool deck around their aboveground pool.  You may choose to hire a local contractor instead.  One suggestion is to use the new plastic lumber on the market.  This product is made at least in part from recycled plastics and will not be damaged by water.  It also will not develop splinters like a wooden deck can.

Another consideration is to check the local laws to see if there are codes for building decks which you will need to obey.  Many areas require a fence to be placed around a pool to reduce the chance of accidental drowning accidents.
