Safe Online Buying of Swimming Pool Supplies

Virtually everything can be purchased online these days, including swimming pool supplies.  Many pool websites offer a good selection of chemicals, toys, and accessories at bargain prices, but there is also a good chance of getting scammed, too.  Here are some principles that will help you stay safe when buying those pool supplies over the internet.

First of all, don't judge a supplier completely on the basis of their website.  It is far too easy for dishonest people to create a website that looks like the real thing but is all bogus.  One positive sign that a pool supply company is legitimate is that you can find a physical address and phone number somewhere on the website.  Another good sign is the presence of a little lock in the address bar of the web browser when you get to the checkout page.  Note:  the lock needs to be in the address bar, not just on the lower corner of the web browser window only.  In addition to the lock, the "http:" in the address bar will suddenly become "https:"  meaning it is a secure page.

When you buy swimming pool supplies from an online supplier, there are several things you can do to further protect yourself from being ripped off.  One of the most important is to pay with a credit card.  This gives a buyer extra built in protection over using a check.  Never send cash or use money wiring services when buying from unknown online suppliers.

Another important safety measure is to read everything carefully and then print a paper copy of your transaction.  Know exactly what you are ordering, and be sure you understand any guarantees and return policy that may apply.  Don't forget to read all of the small print, too.  It's very easy to miss some little thing that makes the deal not as good a deal as you first thought.

If you are buying from an online auction, sellers who have good ratings are safer to buy from.  On the other hand, with a large item like a used spa or above ground pool, there is a fair chance that the seller will not be a regular seller but will only have the one item they want to get rid of.  These people may not have any ratings yet.  You can still get a good deal, but remember that any deal that sounds too good to be true probably is not trustworthy.
