Pool Chemicals

Pool chemicals are solutions and powders used to keep a swimming pool clean. Bacteria and algae are the two main pool pollutants, and pool chemicals attack them and prevent them from multiplying. Some pool chemicals can even be purchased at the local grocery store. Listed below are some of the basic chemicals that are needed to keep a swimming pool clean.

Cyanurated chlorine

Cyanurated chlorine is the most widely used pool chemical. They can control the growth of bacteria and algae if used properly. Chlorine comes in a solid form or as an aqueous suspension.

Powders and tablets are the most common solid varieties of cyanurated chlorine. Powders act quicker but are more volatile. They can also be inhaled and damage the respiratory tract, so they should never be handled without chemical-resistant gloves and a chemical respirator. Tablets slowly dissolve in water. They are safer than powders, and most brands can be used without gloves.

Cyanurated chlorine suspensions are poured into the water. While they are fast-acting and easy to measure, they are highly corrosive and should not be handled with bare hands.

Bromine tablets

Bromine tablets have recently begun to replace chlorine as the preferred method of pool maintenance. Bromine is less of an irritant than chlorine. According to users, it is as effective at eradicating microorganisms from pool water as chlorine. People who use bromine tablets say that even if the pool is used right after the tablets have been dispersed, they do not experience sore eyes or hair damage. These tablets usually come in large buckets. While they are relatively more stable than chlorine, they are more prone to cracking and disintegrating. They usually become white powder inside the bucket instead of a solid tablet. The powder form is still usable, but it poses a lot of danger. It can also be inhaled and irritate the respiratory tract. It should never be handled without protective equipment such as respirators, gloves, and safety goggles.

Metal-control solutions

Metal-control solutions are pool chemicals prevent the buildup of metal particulates and ions. A pool ionizer usually creates these substances, and if left unchecked, they can be as hazardous as most pathogens and bacteria. Metal-control solutions break down metal particles and discharge ions, allowing the particulates to sink to the pool's bottom where they are easily vacuumed away.

Grocery store swimming pool chemicals

Grocery store swimming pool chemicals are also available. These chemicals are used to clean bathroom tiles and fixtures, but they can be used to clean swimming pools as well.

Hydrochloric and muriatic acid are some of the more common cleaning chemicals. They are scrubbed onto and in between bathroom tiles to kill mold and mildew. As swimming pool chemicals, they are poured into the water to create a solution of acid and water. The acid usually evaporates after prolonged exposure to the sun, leaving the pool clean and free of pests.

However, they are highly toxic and corrosive, so they should never be used without suitable protective equipment. Also, swimming pools that have been treated with hydrochloric and muriatic acid should never be used until the chemicals have fully dissipated. You can test if the chemicals have dissipated by sniffing the water. The swimming pool water should be odorless and not smell dry and acrid. Do not swim in the pool if it still smells like this.
